Endeavour Ipswich Basketball Club’s Senior Women moved within one win of the WNBL Division One Championship with a comprehensive forty point win on the road at Barking Abbey on Saturday.
Ipswich started the game slowly, however, it was not long before they found their customary offensive rhythm, scoring 25 points in the period to Barking’s 19. The second period saw Ipswich extend their advantage further with Harriet Welham and Yazmin Edwards combining for seventeen points between them in the period, and 32 as a team – taking a 57-35 lead into the interval.
The third quarter was where Barking played their best basketball of the game, winning the period 18-17, before the fourth quarter saw the Suffolk side put their foot on the gas once again, winning the game’s final frame 33-14, taking the final score to 107-67 to the league leaders.
“This was an efficient win against a team who’s league position doesn’t do the talent they have justice” said Ipswich assistant coach Tom Kelly”. The young assistant is enjoying increased responsibilities with the D1 Women this year and he added “I am really enjoying my role with the women’s team this season, it’s been great to get away with the team on these road trips and spend time with Coach Drane and Coach Carson”.
Ipswich now need to win one of their final two league game’s to secure a third WNBL Division One title in five years. The team host Bristol Academy Flyers at 3:30pm on Saturday – where a packed out Copleston should be expected ahead of a potentially historic game.
