Match Report: Ipswich tame Wolves to move to 15-3

The Endeavour Ipswich Basketball Club Senior Women moved to 15-3 on the season with a 61-57 win against playoff chasing Worcester Wolves.

Ipswich were in control from the opening tip, quickly opening up a double-figure lead that they would keep until five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, at which point Worcester mounted an impressive comeback, bringing the game to within a single point at one stage.

The Ipswich offense was heavily reliant on reigning league MVP Harriet Welham and young star Maisie Keyes, who combined for forty-nine of the home sides sixty-three points. Meanwhile, Ipswich got 20 rebounds from the ever-growing presence of Vermont-bound Louisa Gibbins.

The win keeps the pressure on at the top of the WNBL league standings, which are turning into one of the most fascinating final few weeks of a season in recent memory. With just four games to play, Ipswich are now guaranteed a top three finish. However, with CoLA owning the head-to-head over the Suffolk side, IBC are reliant on other teams if they are to have any chance of winning the regular season title for the fourth time in six seasons. There are many twists and turns left in this season – first and foremost, Ipswich need to keep winning, and there are no guarantees of that with several tough games still to play – starting with Cobham away this coming Saturday, a team who have already beaten Brent Bulls on their home court.

As it stands, CoLA are in the driver’s seat, with five games left to play – win them all and they take the title. Meanwhile Brent Bulls are still very much in the race, with only four losses and will be ready to pounce should Ipswich or CoLA drop games. Of course, the added spice is Brent are still to travel to CoLA, with the date for this potential championship deciding game still to be confirmed.
