Endeavour Ipswich Basketball Club’s Senior Women returned to winning ways with a hard-fought win over a new look, and very tough Anglia Ruskin team on Saturday at Copleston.
Anglia Ruskin led the game for three quarters, up as many as ten at one stage, before Ipswich finally found some momentum mid-way through the third quarter, eventually winning the game by seven points.
ARU put on a shooting clinic in the first half, connecting on eleven of eighteen from deep – with Ipswich unable to find a way to slow their sharp-shooting opponents down. However, in the second half, Ipswich were finally able to find a way to defend the three-point line, allowing the team to find their offensive flow as a consequence. Ipswich were sparked by the defensive efforts of Kaiya Bateman and Hannah Gray, who were able to pressure the opposing guards into some uncharacteristic mistakes – allowing Louisa Gibbins, Harriet Welham and Maddy Wormald to lead the line offensively for the Suffolk side.
Ipswich eventually found a way to grind out what looks to be an important win as the WNBL Division One league slowly starts to take shape. Ipswich were led by double-double’s from Wormald (24&12) and Louisa Gibbins (21&17) while league MVP Harriet Welham added fifteen points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Ipswich move to 2-1 on the season, with a road trip to Reading on Sunday.
